Shoo-t

Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle goes like this:
....
Feed the babies
Who don't have enough to eat
Shoe the children
With no shoes on their feet
House the people
Livin' in the street
Oh, oh, there's a solution

I want to fly like an eagle
To the sea
Fly like an eagle
Let my spirit carry me
I want to fly like an eagle
Till I'm free
Fly through the revolution...

The other day Claire and I were singing those lyrics over and over while she was getting ready for her bath. Funny how songs just pop into our heads, isn't it? I'm not even sure which one of us starting singing it first. Looking back it's completely obvious why we were singing it-- with my upcoming volunteer trip to Africa only two weeks away.

Anyway, after a few times, when we got to the line about "shoe the children," she looked at me and said:

Claire: That's mean.
Betsy: What's mean?
Claire: They feed the babies, but then they shoo the children.
Betsy: What?
Claire: Why do they want to get rid of them just because they don't have any shoes on their feet?
Betsy: OH! Do you think they're saying "shoo" like shoo away and shoo fly????
Claire: Yes.
Betsy: Well, then, I can see why you're sad! It's all good, honey. We're shoe-ing the children, as in putting shoes on their feet.
Claire: OH!!! YAY. That's much better. Let's sing it again.

Awkward Ties

In a conversation about why the Neti Pot works...

Claire: All of our body is tied together.

Betsy: Yep.

Claire: I mean ALL of it. It's all tied together. Our nose to our eyes and mouth... We're all tied together. Except we're not tied to a wall. That would just be awkward.

Power of ads

What happens when Claire gets a new shirt from Scotland (from my parents' recent trip) AND it's a week before some pretty big elections?

This:

Claire: "I'm from Scotland, and I approve this message!" -- spoken in a British/Scottish/cockney-ish accent.

Over and over.

Dark Ages

The light in our shower is burned out.

Claire: Ooooo...that's going to make it scaaary to take a shower until we fix it.

Betsy: Well, it won't be that bad. We have other lights in the bathroom plus a window. Besides, a lot of people do just fine with no light in the shower. When Uncle Trip and I were growing up we didn't have a light in our shower.

Claire: Oh, because lights weren't invented yet, right?

Matt: I've only done that once.

Claire: Oh yeah? I've done it nonce!

This is a counting song, goes out to all y'all

1 foot
2 foot
3 foot 4

don't even get into the next number,
just say a door.

5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

not even close
need to have some more toast

but when i get there
All I is
numbers

but when I get there
but when i get there
I see numbers
numbers, numbers, numbers
that's all

numbers numbers
1,2,3,4,5,6,7
let's go crazy and count to 200

1,2,3,4,5,6,7 let's go crazy and count to 11
kidding kidding kidding kidding.

Let's count to 200
let's do it
1 to 100
no I'm kidding-- 200

this may sound different
but I don't think so
this is the same as always

are you comin' to count with me?
are you conin' to count with me?
are you comin'
are you comin;
are you?

Little Big Dog Song- by Claire

had a house
filled with people
now there's only one

got a dog
and me

and that's all
that can be done.
