The Giving Tree

Tonight I read The Giving Tree to Claire at bedtime. It had been one of those days that needed to end with reading that particular book.

Betsy: Hey, you know, often times the author is trying to tell us something. What do you think we're supposed to learn or know after we read this book?

Claire: That we're supposed to take care of trees and be nice to them. Also don't swing on the branches or you might get hurt.

Betsy: Well..... yeah, maybe. When was tree was the happiest?

Claire: She was happy when the old man sat on her when she was a stump.

Betsy: Right. She was happy when she gave of herself because it made him happy. Like when she gave him her apples and branches, and...

Claire: No, she was definitely happiest when he was sitting there. She just really wanted him to be there with her.

Betsy: Definitely.
